b.1988, Lives and works in London
Responding to place and landscape, Mary weaves together remembered and observed imagery, resulting in subtle and often lyrical work. The physical processes of drawing, painting and printmaking are important tools for her to make works that contain an emotional and sensory charge as well as a sense of time unfolding.
Mary studied art at Goldsmiths College in London, where she developed a fascination with the photographic image and it’s unreliability as a container of memory, and later at the Royal Drawing School where she re-connected with the physical and unconscious aspects of image making through observational drawing.
Tied in with this enquiry into the unconscious is a deep interest in the therapeutic quality of art. Mary runs art workshops alongside her studio practice in museums and galleries in London such as the British Museum and National Gallery and is interested in the affect of both looking at and making art. She is constantly influenced by philosophy, psychology and literature as well as visual culture.
